Today, D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo turns 30, and what a career it’s been to celebrate.
Born in Fontana, California, Amy’s basketball journey took her through USC and TCU before she went on to conquer courts across Spain, Israel, France, Turkey, and now the WNBA with the Atlanta Dream. But it’s in Nigerian colours that she’s built her legend.

As captain, Okonkwo has been the heartbeat of D’Tigress’ golden era. She’s a two-time FIBA AfroBasket MVP (2023 and 2025), helping Nigeria win back-to-back titles and extend their remarkable unbeaten AfroBasket streak. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, her leadership and a fiery half-time team talk, helped spark Nigeria’s historic upset win over Canada, sending D’Tigress into the Olympic quarterfinals for the first time ever.
Teammates describe her as more than just a scorer and rebounder, she’s the emotional glue of the team, the mentor who brings younger players into the fold and sets the standard for hard work and preparation. Off the court, she’s used her platform to champion grassroots basketball back home in Nigeria.
Now in the twilight of a career she calls a “great opportunity” every step of the way, Amy Okonkwo is still chasing more, with her sights set on another Olympic run in 2028.
Happy birthday, Captain Amy. Here’s to 30 years, and many more wins to come. 🏀🎉
